I heard a noise in my house...too loud to be a mouse & Mo was sleeping on the bed...so I went to 'vestigate. My shower curtain fell down. All that heart pounding intrigue over a lousy shower curtain. Will I be able to sleep tonight?

Phew! I'm grateful it wasn't anything more than that, Geo! Though I have to say, if my shower curtain had fallen down WHILE I was in the shower, I probably would have had a heart attack, thinking "Psycho"....

Just a "heads up" warning....

We have just about finished the process of moving Mom here. We've moved all of her clothes and furniture, and we are down to maybe a carload of cleaning supplies and odds-and-ends to bring back. We just have to put the last things from the kitchen cabinets into the garage for a charity to pick up everything. A crew painted the entire interior of the house last week, and she's putting in new carpet in the next week or two. Then it'll go up on the market. So we're right there, nearly done.

As part of the move, Mom sold her car to her granddaughter. Everything is transferred, so Mom called to cancel her car insurance. She explained everything to the agency she has dealt with for years, and everything went fine.

Today, she got a call from the REinsurance company behind the company she has been dealing with. The agent talked to Mom about her decision to cancel the insurance. She told Mom that she was getting such a great discount from bundling the house and car together that it would actually cost her more to drop the car insurance completely. So the agent suggested that Mom keep the car insurance, but drop it from full coverage to liability coverage, and that would save her money. Mom thought that sounded like a good idea, and she appreciated that the lady was so nice to find a way to save her money.

I was listening to only Mom's side of the conversation, but even that side sounded very shady. But I try not to interfere in her decision-making unless there's good reason. After she hung up, I asked Mom to explain the conversation. She told me the above.... And then I asked her to tell me the numbers. She didn't know them; they went by too fast.

So I asked her, bottom line: How can it be MORE expensive to insure just the house, than it is to insure a house AND a car? And she realized it didn't make any sense at all.

So I called back -- and the lady really didn't want to talk to me.... I asked if she needed Mom's permission to talk to me, and she said yes -- and then proceeded to try to talk to Mom again. Um, no. I put her on speaker phone so Mom could hear the whole conversation, and I insisted that she run through the numbers with me. Shimmy to the left. Shimmy to the right.

Mom is currently paying $340 a year for both the house and car. Going to house only will raise her rate to $567. Going to house and the car with liability only would raise her premium to $816. A $250 difference!?!? Oh, hell no. Take the car OFF. They're exploding her rates from $340 a year for house AND full coverage to $567 for the house only??? Thank heavens we're getting her OUT of there and OFF that insurance.

So, please be careful. As I told Mom, her job is to make money for her employer, not be Mom's friend. It took a lot not to go off on the agent for her disgusting attempt to rip off a senior citizen -- telling her it was in her best interest to CONTINUE to insure a car the woman KNEW had been sold more than a month ago!

Furious....

Welcome to America, Lis. My car insurance offers me a great deal if I'll change my house insurance to them. My phone company offers me a great deal if I'll change my cable & internet to them.

Thrubbbbbb on 'em!!! I get my water, gas, electricity, sewer, garbage, cable, & internet from the City. I could get better 'net & cable but the City fixes things the same day usually.

oooh! Good that you were there to catch that scam. I really like that you have your mom with you now.

The latest stupid update...
Both S & Mr S are sitting in jails awaiting their court dates in a month or so. Mr S "should" be getting a huge sentence but who knows. He's got a trial date. yikes! I hope to sit in for that.

When things crash around here, like the dish that came off a table tonight, I blame the cats first and I'm nearly always right.

Way to go, Lis! I think insurance companies charge higher rates for unoccupied houses, but un-owned cars?

Two cats were with me in the dining room tonight "helping" me with a jigsaw puzzle ("Hey, all these edge pieces are stuck together. I can fix that.") while FE was fetching take out Mexican food for dinner. The cats started growling and a few seconds later FE opened the noisy gate outside the door and the cats bolted down the hall. Good watch-cats but not very protective.

After yesterday morning's 50 degree start, this morning's 36 degrees was a reality check. We got a few lengthy sunbreaks today and it did not rain either day.

$340 for house and car ins for a year?

Not in this timezone...unless its a Barbie Dream House and a Hotwheels VW.

They have lopped off a few degrees on my promised temps for the next batch..still pretty good for Feb. Feels cold though.

Looked up thumbing your nose..it was as I had been defining it. I didn't realize that the actual gesture was placing thumb on now with the fingers wiggling. Though I have used the gesture. Originally cocking a snook. Something about the rooster strut and attitude. Fits with the wiggly fingers it would seem.

LOL! Cocking a snook? Now THAT is a new one! emoticon

Yeah, it was a low insurance premium, Agent Byte. Everything is cheaper in Indiana. It's a tiny house with no claims in 21 years. And it's a 16-year-old car with no claims in decades, extending to the car before that. The agent was going to "check with the manager" as to whether she would be allowed to write a policy for a house with no occupant. We've dealt with that before, with empty houses from Brett's great-aunt/uncle, grandparents, and parents. The insurance companies didn't raise the rates, but would only extend the policies for one year from when we notified them.

Geo, I did expect an increase in the house premium because of the un-bundling. But nearly double? C'mon.... The insurance company is mailing Mom the papers to sign to rewrite the insurance policy with the house only. Maybe if there's some kind of delay in the mailing, and then a delay in considering whether to rewrite, and then a delay in mailing back, we can shave time off of the new insurance premium -- and maybe get the house sold quickly enough that it never goes into effect...

Gotta love those very protective cats, Gryphon! emoticon

Deb, the S update is so sad.... Wish there was a way to help her find her way out....
