Re: Dak's Place - 2018 Spring and Summer

the 'rock' throughout there is basalt and busted up basalt mixed into the soil. It wouldn't be farmable without those serious rock picking machines. There are lots of basalt outcroppings. Massive lava flows happened through there. The Missoula floods took out the top soil that had accumulated. A glacier would make a nice clear area in the midst of mountains?

Yes, the combination of glaciers & flood waters produced by melting glaciers & ice dams could easily do it.

Flood Basalts like the Columbia Plateau are used to trace the path of the Yellowstone Hotspot. It was there a long time (10 million years+) filling up the low spots & covering country rock as it moved East. In gold prospecting eroded area, ya look under & over the Basalt markers for river gravels that might have gold in them. Gravity is our friend! Lava flows downhill just like any "liquid" so it will make a level area with just mountain tops sticking out when it hits an area higher than the lava & starts leveling out. Since the flows were periodic, we see layers in the basalts.

The Tennessee Valley where I live is more/less the product of glaciation even though we're hundreds of miles South from where any glaciers were. Rivers seek base level & that is Sea Level. When uplift is constant, river valleys are carved out but where its slow, you get braided streams, plains, & terraces. Chickasaw Bluffs in Memphis are glacial landforms...glacial loess blown down from the Nawth but that big wide Mississippi Valley is a result of the Mississippi River moving & back & forth across the landscape.

And Now the waiting begins... My eMachine is dying & my laptops are on their last legs, too. So I'm having a cheap desktop delivered to Wal-Mart Friday...dare I hold my breath? I actually think the free Win 10 update killed it before its time. There's no fixing eMachines because they haven't made them since 2013. Curse you, Bill Gates.

I feel so Real now. I gots a cheap Slimline HP but who's complaining about a free computer? (The box says wireless mouse & keyboard but that's a lie.) I have never actually bought a computer in all the years I've owned them. I've spent the last hour setting it up & thus far looking good. The cheap ass HP keyboard is similar to a laptop keyboard. Tomorrow I'll be replacing it & the HP mouse with my Logitech stuff.

Re: Dak's Place - 2018 Spring, Summer and Fall

Had a couple of sunny days with temps in the 60s, then one dry day with a wet night. Then very light shower days. Yesterday was dry till after dark, but the high reached 71. Today was showers and breezy with one cloudburst that overshot the gutters. It did get up to 66 before that.

I got my truck back from the shop yesterday which happened to be the 6th month anniversary of the very first time its Check Engine light ever came on. It did not shut down on the 10 mile drive home. I may even drive it to the store tomorrow, but I'll keep the slip of paper with the phone numbers of two towing companies in the glove box.

Was the HP Slimline cheap or free?

Check engine light will come on with a loose battery cable & some other stuff they forget to reset when ya have auto work done.

Still Hot as Hell here...high 80s-90s. Erin's headed back to Clearwater & I will miss all the free meals she bought. Most of the chain restaurants here are now as bad as the fast food places. Only the Greasy Spoon where I buy hamburgers & milk shakes is still passable & the Chinese Buffet.

Erin bought me the HP which was reasonably priced as it was sitting in a warehouse somewhere abt 3 years. But it has built in wifi & six usb ports! Win10 still sucks. My eMachine is going into the other bedroom as a backup...it wasn't ready to give up the ghost after all. Two paid for web sites have informed me in the past two weeks after their latest upgrades that they no longer support Windows Edge browser. Last Winter tech support informed me that they didn't support Firefox so I migrated to Edge on their recommendations. Poo on them...when my subscriptions run out, I probably won't re-up. Windows tells me that Firefox has a bad security certificate so I installed Chrome to get my sites but I'm still peeved at programmers.

today was the usual supervised visit for M's sperm donor. A was asking to see her grandpa, aka her bio great grandfather. I messaged him to meet us at the park. I got two other people to play with my girls at the park while I played PokemonGo. woot! That had to be three birds with one stone.

The sky let loose right as we arrived at the park so we hunkered under the trees for the whole 2 minutes that it lasted. The Girls got wet butts from the slide. Their coats are pretty wet. It was warm enough to still be fun. No gutter burster.

The truck did develop its list of symptoms after service was done on it for the Check Engine light. I've quizzed the mechanics about what they might have inadvertently done then to no avail. In the past six months, I and the various mechanics have put about 800 miles on the vehicle, so I won't make my average annual 8,000 miles this year. The good news is that I drove it about 20 miles today and it did not shut down.

Nice dry day with a high of 64. Went to the farmers' market and got some veg and fruit.

Oh, I was filling my three water filter pitchers this morning, filling a glass at the sink and taking it to the pitchers numerous times when something caused me to look out the window. There was a hot air balloon traveling south to north over my neighbor's pasture, which is lower than my house. His cattle ran toward the south end of the pasture and turned to stare at the fast moving balloon. I could hear the passengers talking as the balloonist was using the burner to lift over the trees at the north end of the field. He got over the trees and quickly sunk below them on his way to the river valley. Then the cattle ran north to see what had become of the monster.
